Thanksgiving contest

Thank you for your well wishes and hope you didn't mind the intrusion of the husband. Actually he got more comments than any of my other postings....so I'm feeling like he maybe I could be voted off. He offered to do the posting, and quite honestly ladies I was worried about what he would write, and then he wanted to post with a picture of me. Since I looked and felt like I was already 10 feet under -I refused. Seriously, who takes pictures of people sick?? And what would you all have said? "wow, she really does look horrible---couldn't you at least comb your hair?" I never have been that sick, I don't think. And glad it's past. I'm feeling much better.
So....on with this week. Yesterday we attended our first Thanksgiving feast for the year. Yes, early but very appreciated. It helps to spread these holidays out when bringing a full van. Thanksgiving and Christmas meals are never very much fun when you have to save room for the next meal in 3 hours. We did that early in our marriage (2 family get togethers in one day) and I'm glad to put my lead foot down on that one. So we were at my family's for a Delicious meal of all the originals...turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie, etc. And then later in the afternoon after naps, Grandma thought it would be fun to let the kids roll out their own pretzels.

This was just for fun...we hadn't made pretzels in Thanksgiving past....but what a great treat. The kids made their own unique shapes. Maybe this should be part of our new tradition, it's fun to mix things up a bit.
So....this brings me to a introduction of a little survey I would like to take from all of you..........

I would like to know special traditions or memories you all have had in Thanksgivings' past. Or a favorite recipe you always have at your T-day meal. Or a funny story you have from years past. Add it as a comment on this post and on Thanksgiving day I will randomly pick one of those names. Then I will send one lucky winner a prize in the mail. (O.k. as in "prize" Ya know the prizes you get in cereal boxes? Think bigger... just not much.)

So get busy and leave a comment about Thanksgiving. I can't wait to see what you have to say!

Does anyone else remember making paper turkeys in grade school, probably in kindergarten? We traced our hand on brown paper, and then cut out colorful construction paper for the feathers; our fingers were the feathers, the thumb the neck and head; the palm of the hand the body of the turkey. Not long ago, my Mom gave me a scrapbook of old kindergarten papers that I had colored and that reminded me of the Thanksgiving turkeys. I like the butternut squash casserole that my Mom usually makes and her pumpkin pie. This year I'm having Mom and Dad at the apartment for dinner~it will just be the 3 of us but I plan to fix a small turkey with some of the "trimmings" and Dad's favorite foods. And then I'll send them home with lots of left-overs. I am especially missing my dear neighbor this holiday week, but I am thankful for all the good times we had together. I'm also thankful for family and friends that share their love with me and for a Heavenly Father that loves me regardless! Thanks for the great web site, Heather. I'm glad you are better! Love to you and your wonderful family~Rosetta

This doesn't involve a traditional turkey, but it's turkey breast. Regardless, it's the best turkey I've ever had! It's so tender and amazing flavor.

1 Turkey breast
1/4 C. apple juice or apple cider
salt and pepper to taste.

Put in crock pot for 4 hr. on High or 8 hr. on Low. It's delicious! (and so easy, not to mention, I really want the prize:)

Here's my favorite tradition ... that I started last year, and hope to continue this year ... how many years until it's really a tradition? Teens and pre-teens love this one! Jones Soda makes a Holiday Pack each year of unique flavors. Last year it was a Thanksgiving Dinner, and included peas, turkey, dinner rolls, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, and antacid (I think there were a few others). Anyway, I bought this wonderful pack of Jones Soda in cool looking bottles, and tiny tasting cups and hauled the whole thing to Atlanta, where we were Giving Thanks with Dave's family. Most of the grandkids are teens. We had a blast tasting, and grossing out! The Dinner rolls were the worst! So ... this year, I've read that the Holiday Pack is a tribute to NFL, and includes Turf, Smelly Socks, ect... I haven't seen it yet, but plan to be on the hunt tomorrow! If anyone knows where I can pick this up, PLEASE let me know! It's a tradition I can't wait to continue! And neither can my kids! Hooray I win!

Me again! Just went to the Jones Soda website, and yup, they're doing a SeaHawks Tribute Pack w/turf, sports cream, perspiration, dirt soda, and sweet victory ... sounds delicious! They also have a holiday pack with ham, and christmas tree, and other misc. Hooray ... now if I can just find it! Who needs Grandma Bertha's Thanksgiving dinner, when Aunt Cindy can provide so much more?

What a neat idea, Heather...you are so creative! Ever since I was a little girl, I always looked forward to putting up our Christmas tree around Thanksgiving and recently I heard a neat tradition that I would like to start with my family. On the first night after you put up the Christmas tree, everyone sleeps together beside it that night. Not sure how much sleep everyone will get, but it's only once a year right? :)

This is way too much fun! I have enjoyed reading the traditions you all have! Thanks for a great idea, Heather! I'll pass on the Jones soda though. Yuk! It does sound like something my nephew would enjoy though. Lucky for me, when I get my tree up, I can see it from my bed.
I've heard of families that have a special tablecloth on their dinner table at Thanksgiving and each one present writes what they are thankful for on it. We never did that but I think it would be fun to see what the children write. It is saved and thankful messages written on it each year. Sorry I'm a little late mentioning this one-you may not be able to go out and get a suitable tablecloth tonight anymore. I'm especially thankful for a warm home and cozy afghans to curl up in on such a cold, dreary evening. I'm looking forward to waking up to snow in the morning! Happy Thanksgiving to all~Rosetta

I guess I'll have to get in on this contest too. Heather's surprises are worth it.
I love the food of Thanksgiving. My Aunt Sylvia's cranberry jello has long been a favorite of mine.
This year I'll make cornbread dressing; a Southern recipe. Find it in the More With Less Cookbook.

Hey, got time for one more? I love to make Gingerbread Dressing, and my husband has come to expect it too. It's made with gingerbread, bacon, apples, onions and orange rind. Yum!
