I have fought the good fight...but I have lost.

For all of our married life (10 1/2 years) we have not had cable. I have been proud of this fact. Really? Who needs to sit around and watch T.V.? In my mind such a waste of time. That is unless it's 10:00 p.m. on a Thursday night and E.R. is about to come on. I just haven't got attached to shows, Except for that one show. (Thanks Beth & Amee) And for the kids I loved channel 34. It is PBS...and it always had something half way decent on it for the kids. But when we quit getting channel 34-because they went digital, I was a little on the dissatisfied side with the 5 channels we had left. No more Sesame Street, or Mister Rogers Neighorhood. Because really....how else will the kids learn their numbers and letters? So anyways a couple of weeks ago Donovan got an offer in the mail for Direct TV. Some bundle offer where if you put your cell phone on with your Internet and combine 1 cup of flour the Direct TV is free. Well, I was reluctant...because I just can't handle another temptation of ways to sit on the couch this winter. I already have this computer for pity sakes. But when it was all said and done....we are actually saving $5! Really 200 channels and then it is $5 less, well I can live with that.

So the above picture is children sitting in front of the TV. And wow, Let's be honest....it's a great babysitter.

In other multi-media news....Suzy is now using the library computer while William has story time at our local library. And the reason she can use the library computer and not our home computer?....Well I don't want her to ruin our computer.

And just to prove that we have done other things besides play on the computer and watch Direct TV.....here is a picture of some winter fun that has only begun. Just down the road, in our sub-division there is a small sledding hill. Within walking distance. We had so much fun. Well maybe not as much Suzy as the older kids. Suzy liked watching better than going down the hill.

And back home for something to warm us up. We were out of hot chocolate mix, so I used a recipe I love just as much. And just because I care about your warmth I will share it with you. Let me know what you think, if you make it.

Butterscotch Steamer
1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup brown sugar

Melt butter and brown sugar together in saucepan.

Add 2 qt. milk heating until hot, but not boiling. Serve in hot mugs sprinkled with cinnamon.

Quote of the day:

At lunch yesterday I was making lunch & out of the corner of my eye I see William tapping and annoying Suzy.

Me: "William, Stop!" (without looking at him.)

William: "How can you see me when your doing your job?"

Well because I'm super mom, that's how.

That butterscotch steamer sounds yummy!! I think that would be something Troy and the kids will love. I love reading about you and your family. Although the snow pictures made me want to hide under the covers until it's 70 degrees outside again! :)

"You're welcome" for the ER addiction!! Pretty sure that was another lifetime... I laughed when I say Suzy on the computer, 'cause I do the same with Alec.

You're so funny....but, welcome to the year 2008! There is Direct TV but still not a high speed connection to the internet on our County Road!!!
Your butterscotch steam sounds very good! and yes, your Grandma Miller is a work horse! She was not actually there when we were knotting the comforters, but I took them over to her on Thurs. morn. and she was busy making granola and was so tickled that we brought all those comforters to her to be hemmed! really? The kitten fabric we got at Yoder's Dept. Store in Shipshe....all the others, except for the ballerina fabric, we got at Lolly's and the ballerina one we got at JoAnn Fabric store. It was fun!
Don't you just love this snow? I'm with anonymous and would love to hide until it's 70 degrees again! I don't particularly care for winter!

I'm out of hot cocoa mix as well. Maybe I'll have to try that recipe the next time I'm freezing. Cable isn't the be all and end all, but it can be pretty entertaining, espeicially in the middle of winter.

Wow, your snow blew ours away! :) We don't even have one flake on the ground anymore. The sledding looks so fun. I especially love that all three of your boys have matching hats.

HI! I too agree about the cable, we got rid of extended cable a couple years ago, we get a few cable stations but nothing but PBS for the kids and I love that! Mostly because they don't see the crazy amount of commercials for new toys! But now you DO get HGTV and the Food Network right? My 2 favorite cable/dish channels! OH and I was the mom who was NEVER going to let the kids watch TV and now? It is my favorite babysitter too! HA!

I'm glad he does too now:)
I keep threatening to cancel our cable but if I were saving $5 I'd get it too!
You guys are so ambitious with the sledding thing already! We usually drag ours out in January when there is nothing left to do but finally go sledding!
And the steamer...OH MY YUMMY!

sledding. What fun it was to take Amy and Matt sledding when we moved from southern In where most of the winter is ice or rain to SNOW in 1983. goshen got lots of snow and ice for skating then.
The steamer sounds good. Want to make froth? Use a mug size wisk, wisk in the usual circle, then wisk straight up and down and there will be bubbles that the kids will think is cool. The recipe I saw called for non-fat milk but I use 2%. I think the more "blue' the milk is the better it must bubble.
The bread was great! JOY
